13 Degrees

13 Degrees

Back out in the woods today and I was surprised at the company. There was cross country skiers, and sleds flying down hills, and sled dogs too!
The dogs were pretty cool to see. Totally unexpected and seemed odd in Illinois, but there were so many of them I was feeling like the odd man out. So much so, I felt like I shouldn’t invade their space.

Now, I know that stuff gets in your head, but have you ever treaded somewhere where you asked yourself if you really should be there?

I have to admit I think that some people have made the arts appear that way. Like it’s this exclusive group and you have to be “smart enough” to get in, when a lot of the times the art isn’t so smart, just presented purposefully odd for shock value. I get kind of pissed anyone can call anything “art” and it flies.

Most artists I know practice everyday, drawing, painting, sculpting. They read, take classes to get better, and they also hustle trying to find their market, working to build there client base.

Sounds like every other business, every other trade I know. They get up, go to work, provide a service and create a product.

Don’t be afraid to get to know the arts better. Talk with artists, pick up a book, see a play, an art exhibit. Never feel left out if you can ask and learn and grow. And I promise too, next time to take my own advise, instead of feeling out of place I’m going to go make friends with those huskies.

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.
